We craft our furniture from sustainably sourced Iroko timber, often referred to as African Teak, native to West Africa. This hardwood is valued for its strength, density, and durability, as well as its natural resistance to decay and insect damage. Before use, each plank is carefully seasoned and cured, enhancing its stability and making it exceptionally well-suited for outdoor environments.
Because of its naturally high oil content, Iroko performs admirably under changing weather conditions when properly maintained. The timber’s distinctive grain—usually straight or slightly interlocked—creates visual depth, while its colour tones range from golden yellow to deep brown. Left to age naturally without treatment, the surface transforms over time to a refined silver-grey patina, occasionally developing fine surface cracks that add character without affecting structural integrity.
To keep your furniture in top condition, we recommend routine maintenance once a year, or as needed, using a suitable outdoor oil or varnish. Each piece is pre-treated with one coat of outdoor oil to help it acclimatise to its new setting and provide initial protection, especially for items placed in fully exposed outdoor spaces.
Long-term care then becomes a matter of personal preference and environment. Clients who require additional durability—such as for commercial or high-traffic settings—may request an industrial-grade sealer. Our sales representatives can advise on the most appropriate option for your installation and location.
As a natural material, Iroko will respond to its surroundings. Sunlight, humidity, and temperature changes will gradually influence its colour and surface texture over several weeks or months. When left untreated, the timber will eventually weather to silver-grey, while minor surface checking may appear over time. These changes are purely aesthetic and do not compromise the wood’s strength.
To refresh and protect the surface, lightly sand the timber by hand or with a machine, then reapply your chosen oil, varnish, or sealer. This not only restores its lustre but also extends the life of your furniture. For further protection during extended periods of non-use, outdoor covers are recommended to reduce direct exposure and preserve its natural beauty.
